10 paradoxes of creative people

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said in his book Creativity: The Work and Lives of 91 Eminent People published by HarperCollins, 1996, that there are 10 paradoxes that creative people have. Here are the paradoxes and my comment about each of one of them. :)

1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.

Totally agree because to be creative, we have to do synergic thinking. That way, we have to spend much energy to our brain, and our brain cannot work well if it isn’t supported by high physical energy.

2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.

I think it would be better if it’s more to be diligent because smart wouldn’t be useful to others if it doesn’t apply work hard. About naïve, I totally agree. :)

3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.

Yes, I agree. Playfulness could create impulsive ideas that support creativity and the ideas should be also caught properly by doing discipline. Responsibility would create the idea generated to be more realistic, and the irresponsibility would create brand new ideas that could be hasn’t been think by anyone else. Again, it should also be controlled by responsibility & discipline.

4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.

I agree because to catch up new ideas for creativity, we need to have inspiration that we could get from imagination & fantasy, and to make it applicable, it needs to consider the reality of what actually that people need with our creativity.

5. Creative people tend to be both extroverted and introverted.

Ambivert! Yes, I totally agree with that because we sometime have to socialize more as an extrovert to get stories from people about their experience to get inspiration and we also have to consider the ideas to be reconsider alone as an introverted.

6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.

Yes, I agree that creative people are humble people because humble made them able to interact easily & more intense with others which makes them easier to get inspiration from people’s experiences, and they must be proud of himself and what they’ve done because by humble, they could help people to share their information or could be called as “curhat” which made them more confident.

7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.

Yes, creative people are more flexible with condition and they would come up with ideas from rigidness to find a new solution. They also don’t want to be stereotype by others because they would confidently think that they are different as a trend setter.

8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.

Yes, I agree that creative people are rebellious and not complainers. They would be sure to walk with what they believe it’s good for them also with strong statement that usually came from conservative point of view.

9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.

Passion is the biggest energy to keep doing something and creative people are having very big passion of what they believe. Of course, they would not do their believe if they don’t have objective foundation to their activities.

10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.

Yes, to be creative sometimes we have to suffer and pain at the beginning to do the best effort to create something, and after it all finished, moreover if it useful to others, we would get satisfaction on what we’ve done, and we would find another challenge to begin a new thing.

SCAMPER: Apple, Google & Toyota

When we identify Apple, Google & Toyota, we would create another innovative things by doing SCAMPER, which is: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Magnify, Minify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, and Reverse.

My SCAMPER combination between Apple, Google & Toyota:

1. Carbon I-Pod

  • Substitute

It substitute the I-Pod materials from plastic to carbon to make the I-Pod has lighter weight and looks more exclusive and segmented for people who interest in racing, sport, or something dynamic. Carbon itself until now is still related to something exclusive and high price.

  • Combine

The substitution itself is supported by Toyota as a car company who have high quality materials of carbon which create perfect combination of Carbon I-Pod. :)

2. Avanza Maps

  • Combine

This is like a car who has automatic steering, conduct by Google Maps. So, all we have to do is choose our destination and the car would run itself to the destination with automatic steering invented by Toyota. In this Avanza Maps case, the car, which is Avanza type of car, has been adapt in the road type in big cities in Indonesia. :)

3. Steer Pod

  • Put in other use

Toyota, who produce car, have the trademark of their steer. To, Toyota fans who enjoy music could “steer” their I-Pod which the click wheel which look like Toyota’s steer. So, if the wheel is touch and move, it would turn out like steer wheel. :)

  • Combine

Toyota’s trademark steer and I-Pod’s trademark click wheel is combined in one thing called Steer Pod which is only release for limited edition only.

4. I-Pod Reverse Click Wheel

  • Reverse

From outer view, the I-Pod is look like the same as any other I-Pod releases. But the click wheel is actually turning left & not right. This I-Pod is made for left handed because they would enjoy the I-Pod more comfortable and easy to use. :)

5. I -”Just Monitor”- Pod

  • Eliminate

This might look like an I-Pod Touch, but actually it’s more like an I-Pod without any click wheel. :) So, is just like the size of monitor of the fifth I-Pod Nano which is fully multi touch screen. So, the size would be smaller from I-Pod Touch and it’s fully graphic & touch. :)

The IDEO Way

IDEO is a design and innovation consulting firm which is based in Palo Alto, California. The company helps the design products, services, environments, and digital experiences. Even Apple Mouse is designed by IDEO. :)

As a senior design and innovation consulting firm, IDEO has made important role in creative industry, which they formed in “IDEO Way”. Here are the five steps in the process of designing a better consumer experience:

1. Observation

They teamed IDEO’s cognitive psychologist, anthropologist, and sociologist with corporate clients to understand the consumer experience. It consist of:

  • Shadowing: Observing people using products, shopping, going to hospitals, or any random activities such as using cellphones
  • Behavioral Mapping: Photographing people within a space, such as hospital waiting room, over two or three days.
  • Consumer Journey: Keeping track of all the interactions that consumer has experience
  • Camera Journals: Asking consumers to keep visual diaries of their activities and impressions relating to a products, such as blogging.
  • Extreme User Interviews: Talking to people who really know – or know nothing – about a product or service, adnd evaluating their experience using it.
  • Storytelling: Tell personal stories about their consumer experience
  • Unfocus Groups: Interview a diverse group of people.

2. Brainstorming

On this step, we do idea generating session analyzing data gathered by observing people. Each last no more than an hour. Rules of brainstorming are strict and are stenciled on the walls:

  • Defer Judgement: Don’t dismiss any ideas.
  • Build on the Ideas of Others: No “buts,” but “ands”.
  • Encourage Wild Ideas: Embrace the most out-of-the-box ideas, because they can be the key to solution.
  • Go for Quantity: Aim for as many new ideas as possible. In a good session, up to 100 ideas are generated in 60 minutes.
  • Be Visual: Use yellow, red, and blue markers to write on big 30-inch by 25-inch Post-its that are put on the wall.
  • Stay Focused on the Topic: Always keep the discussion on target.
  • One Conversation at a Time: No interrupting, no dismissing, no disrespect, no rudeness

3. Rapid Prototyping

Mocking up working models helps everyone visualize possible solutions and speeds up decision-making and innovation. Some guidelines:

  • Mock Up Everything: It is possible to create models not only of products but also of services such as health care and spaces such as museum lobbies.
  • Use Videography: Make short movies to depict the consumer experience.
  • Go Fast: Build mock-ups quickly and cheaply. Never waste time on complicated concept.
  • No Frills: Make prototypes that demonstrate a design idea witout sweating over the details.
  • Create Scenarios: Show how a variety of people use a service in differenct ways and how various designs can meet their individual needs.
  • Bodystorm: Delineate different types of consumers and act out their role.

4. Refining

At this tage, IDEO narrows down the choices to a view possibilities. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Brainstorm: In rapid fashion to weed out ideas and focus on the remaining best options.
  • Focus Prototyping: on a few ideas to arrive at an optimal solution to a problem.
  • Engage the Client: actively in the process of narrowing the choices.
  • Be Disciplined: and ruthless in making selections.
  • Focus: on the outcome of the process – reaching the best possible solution
  • Get Agreement: from all stakeholders. The more top executives who sign off on the solution, the better chances of success.

5. Implementation

Bring IDEO’s strong engineering, design, and social science capabilities to bear when actually creating a product or service.

  • Tap All Resources: Involve IDEO’s diverse workforce from 40 countries to carry out the plans.
  • The Workforce: Employees has advance degrees in different kinds of engineering: mechanical, electrical, biomedical, software, aerospace, and manufacturing. Many are experts in materials science, computer-aided designs, robotics, computer science, movie special effects, molding, industrial interaction, graphic and Web information, fashion and automotive design, business, communications, linguistic, sociology, ergonomics, cognitive psychology, biomechanics, art therapy, ethnology, management consulting, statistics, medicine, and zoology.

All the steps in IDEO way are very applicable in creative based business and it could be useful to be adapt in generating ideas in an organization and company. It can be proven for IDEO who have won many nominations and awards in prestigious events. IDEO has won more of the Business Week/IDSA Industrial Design Excellence Award than any other firm. IDEO has been ranked in the top 25 most innovative companies by Business Week and does consulting work for the other 24 companies in the top 25.

Most important innovation: Social networking sites

For me, the most important innovation in this world today is social networking sites. That’s the sites that link people and be social with them without any more boundaries of place and time. Social networking sites create a new paradigm of be social, and all the benefit of it could be experienced directly by us for free of charge. We just have to input our profile, and we are linked each other and being connected as social communities.

Social networking sites enable us to be expressive of what we want to show to the others. Medias from texts, videos, pictures, podcasts, and the other types of multimedia can be uploaded and be shared easily to others. This would make us be up to date to our close friends every time and anywhere.

Today, there are many social networking sites that exist on the internet. Lets say Facebook, Friendster, MySpace and Twitter. They are popular social networking sites that could apply activities such as sharing, update status, and many more to make us exist on the internet. We could add our profile and status on the internet and could be seen only by our friend that we add. This would create more personal relationship between us and our friends. With all the application which each sites offer, we could not only getting know each other, but we could challenged our friends through games or give special greets with gifts.

Beside only for existing our self on the internet, social networking site apparently used to do business. People often do promotion of their product and service through social networking sites. Many people thinks it’s very effective because, they apparently promote their products to their own friends that they already recognize it. So, the chance for their product to be purchase is larger than big commercial sites that reach more general customers. This would also beneficial for those who want to start a new business which would make the advertisement cost more efficient.

No wonder that today, many big name of social networking sites are offered a big number of money to be purchase by another bigger companies. For example, MySpace social networking site was bought for US$580 million by Rupert Murdoch News Corporation. Many big companies, realized that social networking sites are valuable to get income. The free of use, are applies to make many people use social networking sites, and by that, more advertisement can be shown and click more often by the users.

Social networking sites is getting reach the human needs as a social being. For me, this is one of most important innovation in the history of human being. :)
