Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said in his book Creativity: The Work and Lives of 91 Eminent People published by HarperCollins, 1996, that there are 10 paradoxes that creative people have. Here are the paradoxes and my comment about each of one of them.
1. Creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but they’re also often quiet and at rest.
Totally agree because to be creative, we have to do synergic thinking. That way, we have to spend much energy to our brain, and our brain cannot work well if it isn’t supported by high physical energy.
2. Creative people tend to be smart yet naive at the same time.
I think it would be better if it’s more to be diligent because smart wouldn’t be useful to others if it doesn’t apply work hard. About naïve, I totally agree.
3. Creative people combine playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
Yes, I agree. Playfulness could create impulsive ideas that support creativity and the ideas should be also caught properly by doing discipline. Responsibility would create the idea generated to be more realistic, and the irresponsibility would create brand new ideas that could be hasn’t been think by anyone else. Again, it should also be controlled by responsibility & discipline.
4. Creative people alternate between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality.
I agree because to catch up new ideas for creativity, we need to have inspiration that we could get from imagination & fantasy, and to make it applicable, it needs to consider the reality of what actually that people need with our creativity.
5. Creative people tend to be both extroverted and introverted.
Ambivert! Yes, I totally agree with that because we sometime have to socialize more as an extrovert to get stories from people about their experience to get inspiration and we also have to consider the ideas to be reconsider alone as an introverted.
6. Creative people are humble and proud at the same time.
Yes, I agree that creative people are humble people because humble made them able to interact easily & more intense with others which makes them easier to get inspiration from people’s experiences, and they must be proud of himself and what they’ve done because by humble, they could help people to share their information or could be called as “curhat” which made them more confident.
7. Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping.
Yes, creative people are more flexible with condition and they would come up with ideas from rigidness to find a new solution. They also don’t want to be stereotype by others because they would confidently think that they are different as a trend setter.
8. Creative people are both rebellious and conservative.
Yes, I agree that creative people are rebellious and not complainers. They would be sure to walk with what they believe it’s good for them also with strong statement that usually came from conservative point of view.
9. Most creative people are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
Passion is the biggest energy to keep doing something and creative people are having very big passion of what they believe. Of course, they would not do their believe if they don’t have objective foundation to their activities.
10. Creative people’s openness and sensitivity often exposes them to suffering and pain, yet also to a great deal of enjoyment.
Yes, to be creative sometimes we have to suffer and pain at the beginning to do the best effort to create something, and after it all finished, moreover if it useful to others, we would get satisfaction on what we’ve done, and we would find another challenge to begin a new thing.
